Cards you’ve never seen: 1989 Pro Set James Jefferson #539C W/ Scouting Photo On Front

6 Jun

If you own a copy of the great 1991 Pro Set NFL Collectible Book, not only do you own a cool set in the 9-card Cinderella Story inserts, but you get to catch the lone glimpse of a variation that has probably never reached the hands of any collector.

James Jefferson’ 1989 Pro Set card #539 already comes in 2 types: with and without the ‘Pro Set Prospect’ banner on front. Both are fairly common and we’ve all seen them any number of times. This mysterious third variety appears in the book:

The card pictured above, is actually the image cut from the page in the 1991 Pro Set retrospective book. For whatever reason, maybe just to drive Pro Set collectors even crazier, they used this picture. Pro Set seemed to like their variations to come in 3 or more types. The Riggs, McMahon, Byner and Gizmo Williams cards all attest to this. If this card actually exists, it has to be one of the rarest Pro Set cards produced to have remained hidden all of these years.

      Hi Will,

Do you have a scan of it? Preferably side-by-side with another 1989 Pro Set card? It would be the first copy I have ever seen if so. If so, feel free to email a scan to me:

I also am interested in seeing some scans placed adjacent to the other two variations. If you are able to find scans, would love to see them, either a post on my blog or an e-mail would be appreciated. Thanks!

Has this been confirmed that Will has this card?

I think I’ve figured out where something like this would stand (if in fact it does exist).. directly in the same category as the “See Also..” C Variations in that it was probably a part of the very earliest portions of the Series II printing (if you take a look he’s in Seahawks Practice Jersey so maybe it’s not actually a scouting photo?). Just throwing in my 2 cents, take care.

Supposedly there is yet another variation of this card… One where the “A” logo at the top of the card is replaced with a Seahawks helmet. All the other prospects cards have the team helmet, so this would make sense. I cannot say that I have personally seen one.

This sounds very familiar. Wondering what version is included in the executives binder. I also vaguely recall mention of Brian Washington’s card coming without the ‘scouting photo’ tag, which makes sense since he is shown in an NFL uniform (browns). The old scd magazines also list a corrected version for Tyrone Braxton’s card, showing his picture instead of Ken Bell. Neither of which I have personally seen.

I have three of these! They all came from the same box (seriesII) that I bought way back in 89. I literally just pulled out my card collection from storage yesterday and found this site today. I never would’ve known this cards significance otherwise. I wish everything was this easy!

i think these guys who claim to have the card think that what makes it rare is the photo being a ‘scouting photo’ when in fact it’s the words ‘scouting photo’ in white in the lower left of the card that make it rare. just a heads up to anyone else who thinks they have it…look for the words in the lower left before getting too hyped. 😉
