Did you know that the 1990 Topps Football Master Set has over 1200 cards to it? Each of the 528 cards comes either with or without an “unlicensed disclaimer” on back. That’s 1056 cards right there.
Then each of the 30 1000 Yard Club Cards have those variations. Plus an asterisk variation for each. That’s 120 more cards.
Then you factor in the box bottoms, those have the disclaimer variations….and so on…
Freshly discovered is yet another variation in the 1990 set, card #498 Checklist 1-132. One version has a gap in the border just before it touches the “hashmarks” at bottom-right on front.
A handful of other cards also contain some pretty noticeable variations: All of the Record Breakers subset cards have letter-code variations, Al Baker’s card has a logo color variation, Bruce Hill’s card has a similar border variation to this one. The master checklist on 1990 Topps Football is growing – which makes it one of the most challenging sets to build for the variation collector.
How were the disclaimer cards distributed? Is one version more rare than the other?
Hi Shawn,
The disclaimer cards were distributed in packs and early factory sets. They were the first printed and are slightly more common than the non-disclaimer cards. Neither is too much more valuable than the other, but complete sets of both types can be a slightly tough accomplishment.
The following 1990 Topps football items can be found with and without disclaimers:
-Cards 1-528
-1000 Yard Club
-Box Bottoms
-Wax boxes
-Wrappers
-Factory set boxes
#129 Jim Lachey comes in a few variations. I have two where the card looks scuffed as the color has the appearance that before drying something came in contact with the card. I have one where it shows a small bit of this and two clean versions. Somewhere along the way the issue was corrected but i just found it interesting that i had two cards identical with such an extreme print flaw.
I have a great variation to report on…#159 Frank Minnifield disclaimer backs comes in a version where nearly all of the disclaimer is missing. At first glance it looks like a non-disclaimer back but it is in fact a variation of the disclaimer back.
Just came across checklist variation 498. Like those listed above but mine has what appears to be a hand drawn section where the gap was.
