Quick Look: 1991 Pro Set ‘Special Promotional Sample’ Stamped Promo Cards

28 Apr

My memory may be off but I am fairly certain that I was given one of these stamped 1991 Pro Set cards upon visiting their booth at the 1991 National Collector’s Convention in Anaheim. I want to say it was Randall Cunningham’s base card. Or maybe Jeff George. All I know is that I was disappointed it wasn’t Emmitt or something more “valuable.” In the years since I have only seen a handful of these cards pop up. The image below of Rocket Ismail’s card was one I found in a box of various early 90s “hot” cards in sleeves, picked up at a thrift store in Van Nuys, CA. As of now, it is impossible to say whether Pro Set stamped the entire series one set or just certain players and exactly how many of each were issued. I do not believe that any more than two copies of any player have been confirmed. Because of their non-descript fronts, I turn over every 1991 Pro Set single I find mixed with other promo/oddball/hot cards of the time.

Hi can I please have a password for your 1991 pro set list as it is saying it is protected and needs a password

Why can I not look at some of the ongoing checklists? How do I get a password? This site used to be easy to use with no passwords what is going on?

Yes, all of my work and research was free for you to use for ten years now. Now, I as I continue to work and research and build these lists, I will also be figuring out a way to share the info in a way that provides some compensation for it such as a possible subscription service. Until that time, you will need to use other sources.

Hi Dylan do they have different font for the special promo text on back, one just sold on eBay but looked different to your picture? Item number 185522863732

Hi Wayne, this is the first i’ve seen of this stamp. Every copy of the 1991 Show Samples has the stamp and phrasing like the Rocket Ismail shown here. I’ve seen and owned a handful over the years. It is my understanding that they were stamped for the National card show that year but I’m not 100% that that was their only means of distribution. I am also unsure if Pro Set stamped them or someone involved with the National itself.

Thanks Dylan I wasn’t sure if some cards had the different font or not, just means more cards to collect
