The Living Checklist: 1990 Pro Set Error Variation Promo and Oddity list.

6 Jan

Although there are a bunch of 1990 Pro Set error and variation lists floating around out there, I have found that most are missing a large bit of info (mostly recent discoveries) or as is the usual case, they have incorrect info (i.e. Walter Stanley with #87 on back). I also feel that the popular unconfirmed varieties that may exist are worth noting as well. All recurring print defect variations are now noted with a RPD designation. A recurring print defect refers to cards which are affected by short run obstructions to their printing plate(s) and/or interruptions to the normal printing process BUT that are also found in large enough numbers to be considered variations in their own right. Stat line breaks, stray lines and miscellaneous blotches are examples of such.

So, getting started, I have added the following key:

***** = Extremely rare variation and/or promo. Only a handful confirmed to exist. Possible proof issues.

**** = Very scarce variation and/or promo that is hardly offered for sale.

*** = Scarce variation and/or promo that rarely pop up for sale, usually an early correction or very short-run variety.

** = Scarce variation and/or promo that are rarer than the ‘common’ variations and pop up for sale only occasionally.

* = Slightly tougher to find than a common card, the Johnny Holland NNOB is a good example of this.

No star = Can be found with little searching, usually offered for sale on ebay by a number of sellers at any given time.

Enjoy!

Pro Set football cards are receiving  a heavy amount of collector attention these days. Likely due to a mix of nostalgia experienced by the children of their era (1989-1993, who’re now grown adult collectors) and the staggeringly expensive recent online sales of such previously ‘hidden’ or little-known variations as the Dexter Manley and Lud Denny errors.

This list is complete as of today. Obviously there will be many, many additions to it over time (and I welcome any contributions) and they will be added as they reveal themselves.

Hey there. I am a huge enthusiast of this set and I reference this page often to check which variations I am pulling from packs. I would love to see pics of the variations. Do you have the ability to add pics to this post?

    thanks,

    DJ

    • junkwaxgems June 4, 2010 at 8:38 am #

      Hi DJ,

I do have the ability to post images, but 1990 Pro Set would take me ages to add photos to each variation. Many of the “recent discovery” variations can regularly be found on ebay as a number of sellers offer them from time to time. This would be a good way to get an idea of what the 2 variations for each card look like.

If you check out my other blogs, you’ll see that I try to get a scan or two whenever I spotlight a particular card or set.

  2. james June 22, 2010 at 6:25 pm #

any idea what the ‘backwards t’ (#772b Dexter Manley (does not mention substance abuse, ” Backwards t ” in the word “photo” on back) ***)

    would be worth?

    thanks

    • junkwaxgems June 23, 2010 at 11:11 am #

Prices have varied greatly on this. Originally selling around $150 and dropping from there. I’d estimate $20-30 now, but until it gets documented in the guides, we won’t really know just how rare they are. I personally have bought dozens of final update sets, lots of the Manleys and only have seen 2 copies.

      • Rich August 14, 2012 at 12:55 pm #

what about a Manely backwords t on the 772a substance abuse mentioned card?

  3. DJ July 27, 2010 at 5:31 pm #

Hey again. I recently heard of a Steve Young Promo variation #666 and a Thurman Thomas #444 that was going to be made into a hologram. Do you have any background info on either of those? Are they just rumors?

    thanks in advance,

    DJ

    • junkwaxgems July 28, 2010 at 10:56 am #

This is the first that I’ve heard of this. Though I imagine there are a few die-hard Young collectors out there that would be the most knowledgeable. Very interesting!

    • Rotten Ralph August 1, 2010 at 1:27 pm #

Yes I have the #666 Steve Young. The bio on the back is incredible.

Just going through the old collection and remembered that I have two variations of the Super Bowl 24 card, one is the current year design (1990) and the other features the design from the previous year. All the content on the card is the same, just that the design itself is different. I didnt see this specifically mentioned though I may have missed it.

    • Trent Poyner August 2, 2010 at 8:12 pm #

Hey Qdip, do you have scans of both sides or the cards? Would love to know specifically what you are referring to. Thanks.

  5. Rotten Ralph October 13, 2010 at 7:26 am #

Hello…I noticed that you have a 4 star grading system.
I know that you had the Dexter Manley as 4 stars and it is now down to 3 stars? Did it become less scarce?
I also noticed you have finally listed the Steve Young promo #666 as a 4 star. Thank you for finally recognizing this special card. It took some convincing, but I finally got Beckett grading to also recognize the card. They are grading it as well as my Dexter Manley 772A right now. It will be the FIRST time the graded each of the cards. Can’t wait to get them back in November. Slabbed up and ready to show off.
    Life is GOOD !

    • Ed December 9, 2010 at 7:24 pm #

May I inquire as to where you found the 666B card? I’ve hunted this stuff for years and I rarely find people who even know what it is let alone see one for sale.

I’d love to see the slabbed picture of it when you get it back.

Would you be interested in selling the Steve Young pro set inc card?

      • junkwaxgems March 29, 2011 at 9:37 pm #

I have never owned one of those. Good luck hunting one down!

      • Rotten Ralph March 31, 2011 at 8:05 am #

Hello Matthew….While I can appreciate your interest in the Steve Young #666 card. I regret to inform you that I’m not interested in selling the card at this time. I had it graded by Beckett and I’m not very happy with my transaction. They said there would be NO trouble to grade such a rare card and document it. Well turns out….Not as easy as that. Here’s how it went . My card is graded…but NOT included in the population report. They agreed it was a legitimate card…but would not list it with the Pro Set(Set). Who knows why? All I know is that I spent a lot of money getting it graded&insured,…only to be told different. What a rip. However they did grade my Dexter Manley Substance abuse card #772 (the only one they have ever graded). I’m convinced that getting a card graded is nothing more than an insurance scam. The grading is cheap….but the insurance will eat you up. (And they have their OWN insurance company)Has to be a better way. Well, best of luck in your quest. Rotten Ralph

    • junkwaxgems March 31, 2011 at 8:28 pm #

Not sure how I missed your comment originally, but better late than never, right?

The knowledge of the #666 variation (as well as the Thurman Thomas and Mike Singletary Holograms tests) pushed me to go for a 4-star rating. The Manley didn’t necessarily get “less-rare,” but it certainly seems that it’s popped up more this last year than in the previous six or seven. Add that the Young 666 card has not ever been offered for sale (publicly) as far as I can tell. Maybe a 5-star for that issue? It certainly has to be scarcer than the Manley. As of today, the previously thrown-around production figure of 50 Manley ERRs seems extremely conservative (especially if you consider the commenter below who found uncut 10-sheets of them in the garbage). Either way, the Steve Young you own seems like the top dog in 1990 Pro Set oddities/variations, Manley, Eric Dickerson’s FACT issue and possibly Barry Sanders’ Hawaii promo would be the close second tier, based primarily on how seldom they appear for sale.

  6. Michael October 16, 2010 at 8:35 pm #

I have Andre Ware’s regular 1990 Pro Set card but I also have an error card as well. On the back it has all of Andre Ware’s information of the #19 card but the front of the card is different. Also the back is also kind of blurry looking. Now on the front of the card it has 1990 Pro Bowl listed at the top with Brian Blades WR Seahawks listed at the bottom with his photo on it.

I have another card that Bringham Young #20 card information on the back with the 1990 Pro Bowl on the front and Albert Lewis CB Chiefs on the front of it. The front was also printed out of alignment because there is a dual image/3D effect going on.

I guess I need to go through all the rest of my cards and see what others I might have.

  7. Steven October 28, 2010 at 2:22 am #

    Hi,

Im trying to track down complete (all three series) sets of both 1990 and 1991 pro set as well as 1993. If anyone out there has any sets they’d like to sell give me a shout.

  8. devin December 3, 2010 at 3:36 pm #

I have a 1990 proset card with Troy Aikman on the front and Jerry Ball on the back of the card. Are these wrong back type of errors too numerous to list, or just not of interest to most collectors? I always hung onto it thinking it was a pretty unique and interesting card.

  9. DJ December 8, 2010 at 9:29 pm #

    Trent,

Just wanted you to know that the Marion Belt I purchased from you a couple months ago came back from PSA in a 9 holder!! Card is just too sweet. Top notch seller, everyone.

I’ve been going through my old pro set cards and noticed I have an error card that I can’t find documented anywhere. Maybe you can help and see if you know anything about it. The front of the card is the Greg Kragen 1990 pro bowl #348. The back of the card is the Joe Montana 1989 passing leader #8 card. I haven’t seen the variation listed anywhere. I would appreciate any help. Thank you

    Patrick

    • junkwaxgems February 14, 2011 at 1:06 pm #

      Hi Patrick,

The card is known as a wrong back, they are somewhat common in 1990 Pro Set. Sometimes they find their way into packs, but most often they are scap or printers waste that gets taken from the factory or dumpster and cut up before finding their way into the hobby. This is why they often feature stars and key rookies. Sometimes these are highly coveted, but most often they sell for just a few bucks.

    Thanks. eBay here I come!!!

I came across some uncut sheets ten card sets of 1990 nfl prosets and discovered both the 204a and the 204b how much do you think they would fetch?

What was the ratio of 204a to 204b on the sheets? Were both on the same sheets?

Who were the blank sheet players?

ARE THESE SHEETS RARE? SEVERAL OF THEM HAD BLANK SIDES …THE DEALER HAD YELLOW POSTITS ON THE TROY AIKMAN NO.78 HAD HIM LISTED AS 6-4 AND HE IS 6-3

    • junkwaxgems March 19, 2011 at 8:43 pm #

      Hi Rich,

Well the Manley and Marion variations are quite popular and do sell for a decent amount of cash, more so with the Manley. I really cannot tell you what the uncut sheets are “worth” or would fetch at auction. Pro Set variations are a niche within a niche as it is. I do recommend sending some scans of pics of some o the hoard. Many of us researching this product may benefit by hearing about/seeing what other items were included in this batch. If you’d like to, you can email me at jacksoncoupage@yahoo.com

I’m fairly certain that your sheets would get a lot o interest and if you aren’t attached to them, I recommend putting them up on eBay and seeing what kind of offers you get.

Good luck and Congrats on a strange and rare find!

while collecting my trash route in the 1990s these un cut sheets were in a box.It seems the resident had passed away and was a collector..many of the vintage cards had been removed or taken by scavengers but they left the box ..i put them in a plastic bin and put them in my shed…i became curious when i saw the 204a belt out card on e-bay…after searching for an hour i found the sheet of ten ..as well as the 772a manely substance card…i am still checking off a few others on your variations list…i have some sheets of 1991 pro sets that had been hole puntched with a binder ring …was no.43 of the1987 heisman hero tim brown an error..theres a huge white nfl pro set logo cutting the top of his helmet off…

    Ralph,
thanks for the information, very sad that you were having so much trouble with the young card, it is a impressive card, with a great bio, I have seen scans of it. How did obtain it? Any idea on which direction I should head in order to get the Young, Dexter Manley or lud denny card? I have been really, really been looking and I am starting to tap out..

    • Rotten Ralph April 1, 2011 at 6:29 am #

Matthew….There’s a gentleman on this site above…Trent Poyner that had a 772 Dexter Manley that he got from a friend (me)that he was trying to sell. I know he had it on ebay a while back, but I don’t know if it sold. The card is really a fine example that would enhance any collectors set. This card will fetch a good price and I believe it’s worth every penny. As for the gentleman that recently found some uncut sheets with the Dexter Manley error. This would answer a lot of questions if they do exist. I would really like to see someone confirm these true gems. It could defiantly be a terrific find. I would love to see a photo of these sheets on this site. Best of luck in your quest. Rotten Ralph

I Have a 1990 Pro Bowl Card “Pro Set” With Kevin Ross on the Face and Joe Montana on the Back.
I pulled this card from a pack in 1989 and is in Mint Condition. Is it worth anything?

    • Dylan September 11, 2011 at 7:13 pm #

You card was given away at the Super Bowl card show. In fact, they were also stolen in bulk, which is why they show up more frequently than other years.

  38. brent c September 14, 2011 at 4:05 pm #

I have an error card i did not see on the list for 1990 pro set.

It is a Brian Blades 1990 ProbBowl card with Andre Ware on the back of it,with all of the errors in this particular set are any worth money?

  39. brent September 15, 2011 at 7:03 pm #

Wow thought I posted this yesterday I have what I believe to be 2 different what I believe are HUGE variations and then a few correct copies of pro set 1990 football #335. 40. Misty Sharp October 12, 2011 at 9:33 am #

I have a 1990 Pro Set Derrick Thomas error card. On the front of the card it has a buffalo bills helmet in the lower right corner instead of a cheifs helment and the background is blue behind his name instead of red. I can’t find this error anywhere online. On the back in the corner is number 19.

    • Misty Sharp October 12, 2011 at 9:34 am #

      Ops Chiefs not Cheifs

    • Dylan October 16, 2011 at 10:59 am #

      Hi Misty,

Your card comes from 1991 Pro Set and it’s one of the most famous of Pro Set errors, mainly due to it’s very noticeable mistake on front. These can be found at any time on eBay and typically sell between $5-15, though sometimes less than that lately.

  41. Michael November 7, 2011 at 8:16 pm #

My wife and I were sorting through cards and ran across the Randall Cunningham error card (incomplete text on bottom line -back), and we have no idea what value to put on it. There do not appear to be others on eBay. Can you give some guidance? Thanks so much.

  42. Terry December 6, 2011 at 4:18 am #

I believe I have a variation not listed here. It’s a #162 Flipper Anderson with a Pro Set Logo on the front which is kinda whited out – I think it should be documented & can send a scan if you want to see it next to a normal card…

  43. brad December 17, 2011 at 8:44 am #

Just opened a box of series 2, so far I’ve noticed two cards that struck my eye, #627 Rod Bernstine listed as RB on front and TE on back. Is this a common variation? Also #684 James Williams, there is a light magenta circle on his left shoulder, it doesn’t appear that its apart of his jersey, anyone have a variation without a magenta circle?

  44. Stephen Young January 5, 2012 at 3:15 pm #

It looks like the good Proset boxes to buy are the series#1 boxes with nothing printed on the bottom or with the full ad on bottom for the early errors and late corrections. Is this true? Is there anything rare or anything with any value in the series #2 (yellow) boxes? If someone can answer it would be a great help! Also can anyone send me a scan of the #666B Steve Young card front and back? Thanks !!

    Steve Young,
    stimax2@yahoo.com

    • Stephen Young January 5, 2012 at 3:43 pm #

I have been sent a scan of this card now. Thank you for supplying it for me to see !!!

    • CD January 6, 2012 at 12:38 pm #

I know the accepted information has the no print boxes being first run and the gold border being the middle run, but I have opened gold border boxes and found Marion errors, while at the same time boxes with nothing on the bottom have yielded corrected Marions. This is only my personal experience from opening 50+ boxes(maybe closer to 100) and may not be the same for others. I just wanted to show that collation and distribution of the green boxes is crazy.

      • Dylan January 6, 2012 at 3:23 pm #

I agree, there is no system with the production of series 1.

Ive even pulled small and large Ditka variations from the same box.

      • adam July 27, 2019 at 3:11 pm #

I’ve opened 4 boxes of the gold border and one of the boxes contained 1 error Marion and 2 corrected. The other 3, only the corrected.

I attended the Inaugural event in Anaheim, CA in 1991 for NFL Proline Portraits football cards. I have the entire Signet Series Collectors Album that was given to a few at the event.

Seems like there is a lot of interesting scans and stuff for sale coming through recently. I would be happy to post the scans on the web for all to see, if people would be willing to pass along copies of anything interesting they have seen.

Of course, I would be interested in lists of anybody selling unusual stuff.

If interested, please send scans or items for sale to: patrick [at] offbyone [dot] net

I was recently going through my old cards and found a 1990 Pro Set Brian Blades pro bowl card with Andre Ware bio on the back. Is this card rare?

    • Eric March 8, 2012 at 7:24 am #

1990 Pro Set wrong-backs seem to be more common than other issues and can be found on eBay with some frequency. In particular, I see the AFC Pro Bowl fronts with the award winner card backs the most often. I have not found a definitive checklist yet, but it seems like the going rate for these wrong-backs is somewhere in the neighborhood of $5-$10.

I have a 1990 Pro Set Hall of Fame edition card of Bob Griese. The front and back of the card contains image errors that I have yet to find mentioned anywhere on the web. The front picture is shifted to the left by about 1/4 of an inch. The back of the card is shifted down by about the same. Card #24.

Can anyone confirm that this was a documented error in 1990?

    • Dylan August 2, 2012 at 9:44 am #

      Sounds like a miscut card.

When posting about a possible new variation or responding to confirm the existence of a variation in question, please provide a link to an image of card(s) or email scans directly to me: jacksoncoupage@yahoo.com

This way, I will be able to help answer your question and/or post an entry on this blog to help shed light on the variety.

  56. Patrick August 2, 2012 at 5:31 am #

I was wondering if anybody could tell me a little bit more about how the Manley substance abuse variation was distributed. Were the final update cards ever distributed through wax packs? If so, do you have any idea if the Manley variations were available there? Or, were the final update cards released only through the pre-packaged, plastic-wrapped sets from Pro Set? I recently opened a few of the plastic-wrapped final update sets and I noticed something. All of the cards were oriented the same way–they were all facing the same way and all the tops were aligned…EXCEPT for the Manley. In both sets that I opened, the Manley was oriented a different way. I do not know if that is relevant to how the corrections were inserted into the supply chain or not, but I found it interesting.
    –patrick

    • Dylan August 2, 2012 at 9:55 am #

      Hi Patrick,

From what I know, they were found in the sealed update sets. Final series cards were not issued any other way.

However, readers of this site know that an uncut sheet of 10 was recently discovered and cut up and sold, which I believe has led to the recent availablity of them on ebay.

Having open close to a hundred of the sealed sets, I did notice this pattern. Also, the color of the Manley borders is slightly different than the other Cardinals cards which is usually a quick tell that you’ve received a corrected copy. Another recurring oddity in those sets is the occasional slightly larger cut card.

  57. DJ October 29, 2012 at 8:14 pm #

    Hey JacksonCoupage,

Do you know which box bottom type yielded the Lombardi Holo? I’d like to try and pull one from a pack before I die.

    thanks,
    DJ

    • Dylan December 14, 2012 at 2:44 pm #

No, I do not. There is no solid, absolute rhyme or reason to the box bottoms contrary to what many sellers are claiming. The bottoms were produced at different stages of the presses but early variations have shown up in the “later” type boxes. Both you and I pulled Fred Marion’s from the same case about 2 years ago, IIRC.

      • DJ October 18, 2019 at 7:52 pm #

GUYS!!!!! I just pulled a Lombardi Hologram from a pack for the first time ever. 29 damn years and it finally happened. Genuine surprise, pure joy – this is what it’s all about. YEEEEEAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!

      • adam October 21, 2019 at 7:46 am #

Way to go DJ! What box bottom was it? Was the number of the hologram you pulled a low number?

  58. stephen young November 25, 2012 at 8:59 pm #

Can anyone one send me a photo of the Lomas Brown Variation(s). Thank you !!

    • Dylan December 14, 2012 at 2:39 pm #

There are close-up photos of all 4 types currently listed on ebay. “Lomas Borwn Error” should pull it up.

  59. John December 8, 2012 at 8:25 am #

I came across a Thurman Thomas card #444 which is red and the top and bottom borders are red stating Bills – AFC Champions. Has anyone heard of this variation? I can not find anything about this card.

    • Dylan December 14, 2012 at 2:38 pm #

These are the slightly common Super Bowl XXV team issue sets. The Bills and Giants are easy to locate. The unreleased Raiders and 49ers are the rare types.

  60. John December 15, 2012 at 11:08 pm #

I just started to go through this product that I received in a collection I bought and I’m hooked. I have two of the “belt” hanging out cards so far plus some other variations that I hav e found. Thanks for your list here as I keep printing up oth sites lists but this one seems to be the best. I also have a unopened case to open so I’ll try to post if I find any of the more rarer cards. Are the miscut cards or off color cards worth anything? Tanks in advance, John

    • Dylan December 18, 2012 at 2:56 pm #

Thanks. I just updated it today with over 50 new entries. Keep checking other lists too because there is much that still needs to be added to this one. Over time I will add more.

      • kwikford December 18, 2012 at 4:24 pm #

I just started to open boxes and found more belt variation cards plus maybe a few new ones.

  61. brett hosler December 29, 2012 at 8:49 am #

Um, I have a bunch of these cards. I also have a bunch that seem like they should be listed here. I collected a ton of these when they first came out and throughout 1990.

I have a card showing erik mcmillan on the front as his pro bowl card, but on the back it shows walter stanleys’ lions card. Also, the printing on the back is all messed up.

    Has anyone heard of this?

  62. Noah January 14, 2013 at 11:46 am #

I have a John Settle 37 Card with NO red line, that shows unverified. Get back to me if you want to see a scan of it to show it does exist.

  63. Chris January 14, 2013 at 10:21 pm #

Happened to run across two boxes of unopened Series 1 packs at a local thrift store – I bought about 40 packs. Open all of them, probably about 10 verified error cards found in total.

Would look to sell them if anyone is interested – I am more interested getting stuff to folks who will appreciate it!

I have the #78b Troy Aikman (red line removed from back, white streak through ‘j’ in ‘injured’ on back), #135a Rohn Stark (with name shifted to left on front – ‘K’ lines up with tip of foot) and #346a Tunch Ilkin PB (black line on front by knee).

  64. Chris January 18, 2013 at 3:45 pm #

Just pulled a few more cards – potentially of interest – from Series II packs:

    1. #460b Eric Ball (RECEIVING fully printed, stat headings clipped off) **

    2. #743A Johnny Bailey RC/(Back says 46) *

    3. #547b Max Montoya (full TM on front) *

As always, please let me know if you’re interested in one or all

    • Chris January 18, 2013 at 4:23 pm #

Just looked through some additional Series 1 cards:

      1. #253 Buddy Ryan – This card has a small yellow dot below the C in “Coach” on the front of the card. Not sure if this is a printing error?

      2. #43 Nate Odomes – This card doesn’t have the en-longed “T” on the front, but has a white blotch on the T in his first name. Error?

      3. Playbook III Insert – Very strong/defined black printer lines on front bottom, inside left top and back double. Double lines approx 1/4” apart on front bottom and back bottom. Single line inside left top. Anyone seen this before?

      4. #356 Anthony Miller PB – I noticed a very distinct 1/4” long line in between the R in Miller and the G in Chargers on back top of card.

5.#98c Lomas Brown (blotch completely removed from front, red curled slash through top of photo) **

      6. #50a Kevin Butler ( ic in Chicago 86 stats is whited-out) ** In my card the ic is not completely whited out – but is partially whited out – almost like small grains of salt sprinkled on the ic.

Just got 6 final update sets in, opened the first one and none of the rare variation, but it had 2 #800 Emmit’s (bonus!). Second set, same thing. Anyone else have this happen?

    • cl_kyle April 10, 2013 at 12:05 pm #

OK, finished opening. Ended up with 4 double Emmitt packs (all had 134b with clipped numbers), 1 single Emmitt pack (134b with clipped numbers also), and 1 single Emmitt pack with 134bb (full numbers). If anyone needs a 134b Andre Rison, let me know.

Big PSA submission returned, boys!! I’m up over 70% PSA 10 in this set, and I hope to be over 80% by the end of the year. I also got back one MAJOR big hit this time – the Barry Sanders #1 variation in PSA 10!! Need the Fred Marion in PSA 10 now and we’re in business.

    • matt May 25, 2013 at 8:40 am #

      DJ,
Congratulations have you been able to find any of the rare stuff like the Steve Young VP and Lud Denny and get them graded PSA 10?

      • DJ May 30, 2013 at 9:41 pm #

        Hi Matt,

PSA is refusing to grade the Lud Denny and I suspect they’ll take the same stance on the Steve Young card. I am going to try to convince them that the Lud Denny has been a staple card known in the hobby for years and should be included in the master set, but it’s not going to be easy. Frankly, they probably shouldn’t include either the Denny, Steve Young, or the Barry Sanders Hawaii card in the basic set since none of these could be pulled from packs. It’s debatable whether they should be included in the master set or not.

Regardless, I have three Dennys and they all look like they’ll grade 8-9. Still haven’t gotten a hold of a Steve Young.

      • Matt May 30, 2013 at 9:43 pm #

I am shocked PSA wont validate the Denny card……

  67. Dave May 30, 2013 at 5:24 pm #

In my quest through my collection attempting to find a Fred Marion belt card, I found what I think is another error card that depicts what looks like a pink penis drawn on the referees right pant leg. I’m not sure what this one is all about but if anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated.

    • Dylan May 30, 2013 at 6:09 pm #

      Hi Dave,

Nothing surprises me with this set. I’d love to see a scan if possible.

    • Dylan May 26, 2014 at 8:57 pm #

The league leader/award winner cards (gold foil borders) had a different printing procedure than others. They underwent the regular process but the borders were printed after the rest of the card and finally, the black ink portions within the borders such as their name, card number, were printed over the gold foil. The Anderson example missed that final step, which is why all the other print appears on the card.

  68. DJ June 20, 2013 at 7:28 pm #

Yes, BGS will grade the Lud Denny.

    705. Anthony Johnson missing part of letter f and o in for in second to the last line of text on back. I had two of nine with this variation. Coincidentally it occurred in version with text on front near photo. Not all versions with text near photo had this variation on back.

Good timing, I just opened a box of Series II last week. Confirmed 705 & 664 variations, need to dig up the rest of my copies of the others.

#788 has a similar variation to #790-798, in which the NFL logo comes in blue or purple. Also the the title stripe on back has matching color variation.

I found a #75 Ozzie Newsome w/Black lettering for his name, number, and pos. on the back. The card # on the lower rt. is also in black. The front has “The official NFL Card” at the top in black and ” TE – Browns” under his name is in black. All of the other Brown’s players are in white. Or the whole set for that matter. What do you think?

    Thanks, DAN

Just a quick note #94 Charles Haley there is a player to his left that casts a shadow it is in a bad spot I have seen this card on ebay called the penis card I have seen both versions w/ and without the shadow. Is this a tough card with the shadow or just one that is as plentiful as many of the error/ variation cards

    • Dylan February 25, 2016 at 10:23 am #

Can you please email scans showing both versions to: jacksoncoupage@yahoo.com. I have looked through 100s of copies online and in person and do not see any possibility of such a variation. Did not see anything on ebay (active of completed) listing a Haley “penis” variation either.

One side is the back of Leslie O Neal card # 364, and on the other side is the back of card #29 which is Bob St Clair. Any idea how rare this card is? I can not find it anywhere to find out or find out how much it may be worth.

    • Dylan November 26, 2018 at 9:51 am #

Hi, these are very common printer’s waste cards that were taken from the factory in sheet form and cut up by dealers/collectors. There is a seemingly infinite number of combinations and while some sell decently, most do not. There has been an abundance of them on ebay over the last 5-6 years or so.

  85. adam November 20, 2018 at 5:12 pm #

    • Steve young December 8, 2018 at 5:30 pm #

Pretty common not one of the harder ones to find at all !

  87. adam August 2, 2019 at 1:30 pm #

Not sure if anyone checks this anymore, but I found some new errors. I have multiples of these cards along with corrected versions, so they aren’t common blank backs, wrong backs, or printing flaws.

#295 Jerry Rice: yellow 1/4″ line on bottom front
#198 Wade Wilson: 3, 1/4″ red marks below Vikings on back
#182 Louis Oliver: 1/2″ black vertical line on back near number 182. I also have a version of this that is partially airbrushed to only 1/4″.
#300 Jeff Bryant: green curved mark on front by referee’s knee.
#138 Fredd Young: small black mark by saints player’s shoulder. Also a corrected version with a 1/4″ red mark by card number on back.
#137 Clarence Verdin: blue dot(s) extending from from blue area to white area on bottom front of card.
#273 Keith Willis: red mark on front yellow banner before “Keith”.
#81 Crawford Ker: Black mark in “O” of Crawford on front.
#84 Ken Norton: Curved mark on front between “ton” of Norton.
#223 Carl Banks: Curved mark on Giants helmet on front.
#42 Scott Norwood red sqwiggle on front by tee.
#44 Scott Radecic: 1/2″ airbrush mark on front by ProSet logo
#354 Erik McMillian: faint black marks at bottom of card on front
#282 Billy Joe Tolliver: small red mark between “e” and “t” on front
#302 Norm Johnson: 1″ red mark on front from shoe to holder hand

*also, all the Colts cards have a version where the Colts logo on the back slants down to the right.

  88. Awave December 18, 2019 at 9:05 am #

I was just looking through some of my old Pro Set cards while scanning the site. Found a variation of the #78 Troy Aikman with a vertical bold black line (with a white haze) through the S in “COWBOYS” on the back. I have 2 of these out of 13 cards. This variation isn’t yet listed here. These were my dad’s and he broke a number of 1990 Pro Set boxes from varying times in the print run. Anyone else have this variation?

    • Awave February 22, 2020 at 10:52 am #

Also noticed an unmentioned version of the Roger Craig. One is perfectly clean/airbrushed. The other has the blood airbrushed out, but has a black dot on his right leg.

    • Dylan February 24, 2020 at 3:21 pm #

This is a print flaw. And not commonly found one, ie, RPD. Therefore, it is not included in master sets (typically) and will not be included in my lists.

      • awave June 15, 2020 at 1:36 pm #

I’ve seen a few floating on Ebay just by checking photos of card backs and found a couple in my own collection. Don’t think it should be so quickly dismissed.

Anyone familiar with the NY Giants variations in the first series that have the logo on the back partially filled in? Very similar to the Via Sikahema triangle, but blues match perfectly with the Giants logo. I pulled only a few – different players – out of a first run box.

  91. Matt Haggard May 6, 2020 at 11:36 am #

Hello I have a question. I have had this card since personally collected back in 1990 when I was only 12 and I have never been able to find out much about it but I think it might possibly be the only one in existence and I was wanting to see if anyone had ever seen another one.

It is an Anthony Munoz Pro-Bowl card on the front but on the back is the back of the HoF Jack Lambert. One of the corners is white as if the print ran out of ink or something. It is definitely NOT two cards stuck together as is easy to see upon inspection. I just put it away in a box and kind of forgot about it after never seeing anything in Beckett about it. Would it be of any value if it did happen to be the only one?

    • Dylan May 6, 2020 at 12:22 pm #

This is a wrong back card. While some entered packs, 95% of them entered the hobby by dumpster divers fishing out misprinted sheets outside of the printing facilities. They are very common and don’t usually command much of a premium but are constantly choking up eBay searches for “pro set error.” Your specific card may not be on there now but I can confirm that it has been before as well as other combination of Munoz and Lambert. There are nearly limitless front and back combos as a result of this so collectors do not typically feel they are a must for their collections.

Hi all. Still grinding away at this set in all PSA 10. Getting down to the final 10% and a handful of the toughest 10s are going to variation cards. If you have very clean copies of the following cards, shoot me an email (djcebay@yahoo.com) and let’s discuss:

#18b Chris Doleman 104.5 sacks for Taylor variation
#111b Perry Kemp correct photo variation
#114b Sterling Sharpe born in Chicago variation
#152b Mervyn Fernandez Drafted 10th round 83 variation
#161c Art Shell small HOF letters & bday 11/26/46 variation
#161d Art Shell large HOF letters & bday 11/26/46 variation
#287a Roger Craig blood stain variation

I’ll even give you a bonus if we complete a sale AND I’m able to submit it and get a PSA 10.

    Thank you!
