Wow. Have I already sunk so low into the junk era that I’m blogging about 1991 Donruss? Unfortunately yes. 1991 Donruss is one of those sets that I despise from the beloved speculation era. I’m not sure why I hate it so much, the colors? The design? The fact that Ive never pulled an Elite insert? Well, 1991 Donruss gets a little credit in my book because of one card: 1991 Donruss Highlights Andy Hawkins #BC-12A “Pitcher” ERR
This stupid card has eluded me for the years now. My muddled memories of being at summer camp in 1991 are littered with images of frenzied 1991 Donruss, Stadium Club and Topps Traded pack-busting and I seem to think that at some point between 1991 and 1992, that I owned this specific variation. Whether I did or didn’t is pretty irrelevant but I can say for sure that it’s pretty impossible to find today. Probably because it’s a rare 1991 Donruss common (oxymoron).
The cards pictured above are a bit grainy but looking at the banners under his name will clearly show both the error and corrected version. It reads: “No-Hits White Sox” under his name on front on the correct type. The error version reads: “Pitcher” as if it’s in the base card format instead of the Highlights subset format. I am willing to bet that if up for the challenge, that you could pull one of those Ryne Sandberg Legend Autographs before you ever pull the Hawkins error. I truly believe it’s that kind of rare (ed note: I can be wrong). I’ve never seen a single copy on ebay. None have appeared for sale on beckett, sportsbuy or anywhere whithin google’s search radius – for at least the last 5 years. Anyone have one these guys?

Well i bought a pack of donruss. 1991 green pack series 2 ..and low and behold i didn’t only get one but i got two. No hit white sox in that one pack…..

i totally pulled this card as a kid back in 91. i remember noticing it immediately as an error and put it in a top loader. since i had a hard time getting rid of cards and still do i’m certain i still have it. i would consider selling it to you as it would bring you more joy of owning it than it would me. let me know if youre interested.

Okay, so several people have reported having it, can we get a picture or scan of some sort. Otherwise, we are back where we started- NO confirmed copy.
So many talkers, no action. For such an impossible card, amazing how many “have it” yet no one can provide a simple scan.
Or it may be that most checked it off years (decades?) ago and don’t care to dig through an entire collection to scan one. Can’t say I blame them. Maybe post a comment with your highest offer, see if that gets the response you’re looking for.

I was reading this post and laughed at myself… I to had the same problem with this donruss series… My dad and I would by boxes of cards at a time, random brands and ALWAYS PULLED TRASH OUT OF THE DONRUSS SERIES!!!!!! One day my dad stopped by a card store that was close by us at the time and paid I think .50 cents to a 1.00 at the time for a single pack and pulled a signed Ryne Sandberg out of the pack!!!!!! It was signed in blue sharpie and was numbered whatever out of 5,000 I think? Anyway I bought a few more boxes of donruss after that and got nothing but more junk and thats the time I pretty much stopped collecting!!!! Just wanted to share a little bit… Joshua

I just pulled one (literally a few seconds ago!!) while going through an unopened box of Donruss 91 series 2 wax packs that my dad has been storing the past 20+ years. The card is certainly in mint condition as this is the first time it has ever been touched. I would never have known the card was an error if not for the post. If someone is interested in buying, let me know and perhaps I’ll consider selling…
